A strategic commitment of Youth Development Australia is the development of new ideas and innovative programs for young people in response to issues. The convening of think-tank workshops and the holding of public policy conferences from time to time is seen as a way of doing this. The think-tank approach draws on contemporary research and practice in specific fields of inquiry in youth policy in Australia but more importantly a successful way of facilitating an in-camera, in-depth and solutions-focused policy discussion about what needs to be done and why, that crossed professional and political boundaries. These gatherings and associated conferences are promoted widely in mainstream media in an attempt to elevate public awareness of the policy issue and to inform evidence-based public debate. Also, this serves to introduce to the media a broader pool of experts in various policy fields for future comment when the issue becomes one of public interest in the future.
